Advice for Macbeth
Posted on March 28th, 2008 at 6:55 am by shorewoodcatapang and

Macbeth is in the situation where he is attempting to do something just for the sake of his selfishness by murdering an innocent individual. He is also convinced by Lady Macbeth of stating how unmanly Macbeth is acting when he doesn’t take risks into doing what is the best for him, and no morals or thoughts are being put into it. Macbeth believes that real men do certain things with reasonings and morals, and knowing the fact that doing certain things is wrong, where in this case is killing an innocent king only just to be king himself. So my advice to him is that he doesn’t have to listen to everything Lady Macbeth says when he already knows its a wrong thing to do. Always go for your gut feeling because in the end you wouldn’t feel that much regretted and instead would feel like you haven’t done anything wrong.

Why Shakespeare?
Posted on March 19th, 2008 at 8:16 am by shorewoodcatapang and

It is very interesting in how every year we get to learn more about Shakespeare that I have no problem in spelling Shakespeare. The acting part is I think the funnest part. I remember acting out scenes a number of times in seventh grade in one of Shakespeare’s famous plays called “Much Ado About Nothing”. I find it hard to understand his writings, especially in the past where we had to translate a scene into modern day English. Shakespeare uses a lot of metaphors and similes, and language I find hard to understand. I also remembered how reading his plays out loud, you must talk fast and can’t make ANY pauses until you get to the period. There are a number of times where his sentences are really long that I find it hard to recite it out loud, and lose my breath right in the middle of the long passage. His passages are written like poetic format, but you don’t talk in a poetic way. He is famous for his plays, and his plays even became movies. Such as Romeo and Juliet where it had different versions of the movie. Shakespeare is incorporated in every English class every year to understand  how the English language was like and how it was written back in the 17th century.

Life of Pi Response

I believe that this is a good book to read as a whole class because of how it demonstrates survival and how someone comes across in following three diverse, “Jesus, Mary, Muhammad and Vishnu!” These religion contradicts one another.

When you read Life of Pi, you really have to put a lot of thought into the book because a lot of metaphors are mentioned by the main character, “…a wall in bright red letters the question: DO YOU KNOW WHICH IS THE MOST DANGEROUS ANIMAL IN THE ZOO? An arrow pointed to a small curtain….Behind it was a curtain, with a mirror.”

Other than having it kind of hard to put a lot of thought into it, the book starts to get very interesting and adventurous when the character gets stuck on the lifeboat with a tiger. The book also has some helpful surviving tips along the way, “So long as no excessive water is lost through perspiration, the body can survive up to fourteen days without water. If you feel thirsty, suck a button.”

Other than an English class reading this book, a psychology class would also want to read this book because psychology is the study of human thinking. So the psychology class would figure out why would Pi (the mail character) would want to follow three diverse religions and what would have been in the tiger’s mind while being on the lifeboat alone with Pi.

I personally enjoyed the book….READ LIFE OF PI!

The Dumbing of America
Posted on March 10th, 2008 at 9:52 am by shorewoodcatapang and

1. The author is trying to convince that the US is running into the wrong direction because of the way how the US is being governed and controlled. “The mind of this country, taught to aim at low objects, eats upon itself.” She is also trying to say that the US is not really eager to go above and beyond at what is expected when living in the US.

2. According to the author, the evidence  about the US being dumber than before is how it is getting out of hand due to several misleadings and commotions such as how education is more formal. Another would be how certain moments are affecting people in school and are dropping out.

3. Jacob believes that laziness caused the US to become dumber. “In 1982, 82 percent of college graduates read novels or poems for pleasure; two decades later, only 67 percent did. And more than 40 percent of Americans under 44 did not read a single book — fiction or nonfiction — over the course of a year. The proportion of 17-year-olds who read nothing (unless required to do so for school) more than doubled between 1984 and 2004. This time period, of course, encompasses the rise of personal computers, Web surfing and video games.”

4. Anti-intellectualism is when people are not putting enough effort in things that are more important and productive, pretty much lazy, such as playing video games than reading a book, or going out clubbing than doing homework.

5. Erosion of general knowledge is when certain things are affecting people’s minds and making them less knowledgeable or dumb.

6. The arrogance of lack of knowledge is making people dumber by not knowing the important facts about obvious things…and when you don’t know important things that happened, then your life won’t be successful.

7.  I don’t really agree that life always depend on knowledge, but also the skills provided by the person. Just because a person doesn’t read as much as the smartest person in the world doesn’t necessarily mean that the US became dumb. Just as long as we make the right decisions in things and moments…and that is what matters most.
